Install Firefox extension to Remove Paywalls

Our Firefox extension is easy to install, and using it you are just one click away from bypassing paywalls. Works on hundreds of websites, including NYTimes, Economist, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal. (by the way, we have a Chrome extension, and an iPhone extension too!)

Option 1: Install directly from Firefox Add-ons

Pinning the extension will give you an icon next to the search bar for easy access

  1. Visit the Firefox extension on the Mozilla Add-ons platform.
  2. Click “Add to Firefox” (blue button)
  3. On the pop-up that appears saying “Add RemovePaywalls.com?”, click “Add”. Extension has now been added and can be found in your extensions section (the puzzle piece icon to the right of the search bar)
  4. We recommend pinning the extension for easy access: when in the extension menu (after clicking the puzzle piece), click the pin next to “Remove Paywalls”. This keeps the padlock icon next to the search bar for easyy access
  5. Whenever you are on an article behind a paywall, click the Remove Paywalls button (which looks like a padlock) to bypass it.

Option 2: Install manually (for advanced users)

  1. Note that this requires Firefox Developer Edition or Nightly. If you don’t have that, please download it first
  2. Enable unsigned extensions in Firefox:
    • Go to about:config in Firefox – by entering that into the search bar
    • Set it to false – by double clicking on the word “true”, or by clicking the “toggle” button
    • Search for xpinstall.signatures.required – by searching for it at the top of the bar
  3. Click to download the extension here
  4. When the popup appears (“Allow removepaywalls.com to install an add-on?”), click “Continue to Installation”
  5. When the next popup appears (“Add Removepaywalls.com?”) click “Add”
  6. Note that if step 5 & 6 didn’t happen when you clicked to download the extension, drag and drop the downloaded .xpi file into Firefox to install.

Now, whenever you hit a paywall, click the Remove Paywalls button under extensions and the tool will search the archives for the full article. You can find it by clicking on the puzzle piece to the right of the search button. The button for the Remove Paywalls extension looks like an unlocked padlock.

We recommend pinning the extension to the toolbar for easy access!
